When deciding to learn to fly uk, one of the earliest decisions you will make is choosing between the Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (LAPL) and the traditional Private Pilot Licence (PPL).

Both licences allow you to command single-engine piston aircraft and carry friends and family, but they have key differences in minimum training hours, medical requirements, international flying rights, and total cost.

Here is a side-by-side comparison to help you choose the right licence for your aviation goals.

Quick Comparison Table: LAPL vs PPL

1. Cost Comparison: How Much Do You Save with an LAPL?

Because the LAPL requires a legal minimum of 30 hours compared to the PPL's 45 hours, the entry cost is significantly lower:

  • LAPL Total Cost: Approx. £7,500 – £9,500 (ideal for recreational flyers who want to fly locally on weekends).
  • PPL Total Cost: Approx. £11,000 – £14,500 (ideal for pilots who want full flexibility or aspire to commercial aviation).

If you fly consistently during good weather, an LAPL can save you £3,000 to £5,000 in initial training fees.

2. Medical Requirements: Why LAPL is Easier for Some Pilots

The medical examination is often a deciding factor:

  • LAPL Medical: Can be completed by your registered NHS General Practitioner (GP) or an Aero-Medical Examiner (AME). The physical standards are roughly equivalent to a DVLA Group 2 commercial driving licence.
  • PPL Class 2 Medical: Must be conducted by an authorized UK CAA Aero-Medical Examiner (AME). It involves more detailed cardiovascular, vision, and hearing tests.

If you have pre-existing medical conditions that make a Class 2 medical challenging, the LAPL is often the most accessible route to getting into the cockpit.

3. Upgrading from LAPL to PPL Later

You are never locked in. If you start with an LAPL and later decide you want to fly internationally outside Europe or progress toward a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), you can upgrade to a full PPL by completing 15 additional flight hours (including 10 hours of flight training and a 150 nautical mile solo cross-country flight) and taking the PPL skills test.

Which Licence Should You Choose?

  • Choose the LAPL if: You want to fly recreationally around the UK and Europe with up to 3 friends, want the lowest startup cost, or prefer an easier medical standard.
  • Choose the PPL if: You want to fly worldwide, add advanced instrument ratings (IMC/IR-Restricted), fly higher-performance aircraft, or follow the modular pilot training uk route toward a commercial career.
